Charging for Travel Vaccinations

Hepatitis A and Typhoid vaccinations for most travellers must be given free of charge and the vaccine cost reclaimed by FP10 on Form FP34D - these are two of the item of service payable vaccinations which were included in the Red Book before the new GMS contract in 2004. The same rules apply to PMS practices as the fees were included in the original PMS baselines. You cannot charge a non-refundable deposit for DNAs at appointments for these "free" travel vaccinations.

The ONLY travel vaccinations that you are permitted to provide privately and charge your patients are:

  • Hepatitis A - for travellers to Northern Europe, Australia and New Zealand
  • Typhoid - for travellers to Northern Europe, Australia, New Zealand, USA & Canada
  • Japanese Encephalitis B
  • Tick-borne Encephalitis
  • Rabies
  • Meningococcal
  • Acwyvax
  • Cholera (for patients expressing a personal preference)
  • Yellow Fever (providing you are a registered Nathnac Centre)
  • Immunoglobulin

Other rare travel vaccines

For these private vaccinations you can charge the patient for the cost of the vaccine, nurse time and an administration fee as well as a non-refundable deposit in the event of a DNA. You must NOT submit FP10s on Form FP34D for any vaccines given privately, although if the practice does not wish to buy in the vaccine you can give a private prescription to a patient to take to the chemist. You may charge a private prescription fee in these circumstances in addition to the cost of nurse and admin time.
