Update on our change to EMIS WEB

We are now well into our familiarisation period leading up to May 8th 2014 the big switch over from EMIS PCS to EMIS WEB.

I will admit, that I was not looking forward to the change, bearing in mind the severe problems that we had 9 years ago changing to EMIS PCS from another system. However that I think was down to me being only 2 months into the post, with little NHS experience.

We are now 4 weeks in, and I needn’t have worried, any problems so far have been very minor and sorted quickly and in some ways we all wish we could changeover today.

Will it live up to expectations?

Over the last couple of years I have seen several demonstrations and was really impressed. So could it be that much better than our existing system?  Yes I certainly think so.

Having spent some time on it being trained, and cascading it down to my staff I think it is even better than the demonstrations I saw.

It is also quite clear to me that the IT,CSU & EMIS  have got their acts together, and are offering both telephone and visit support during this time and it is certainly looking to be a slick programme of change.

There are a lot of meetings to organise during this period and many different people to see.

Preparation is the key!

So before we had started our first training session I instructed IT to replace all our computers by the end of March ensuring so they are web friendly.

We have had visits from EMIS engineers also to check things out and ensure their side of the spec is up to date.

We have also had requests for templates to be put on by the CSU. It does seem unending but that’s the price to pay, juggling an already heavy workload with the changeover.

I am lucky though I have a temporary assistant and as they say 2 heads are proving better than one.

Last week we had our first full days training and we did find this of the highest quality and even though it was a long session we consider we have absorbed a lot of the details.

This week I introduced the system to all our staff on a one to one basis. They had not seen the system before so I was expecting some resistance to this as normally we all do not like change.

The first member of staff was so impressed at what it could do and the benefits in speeding up her role that she went away and spoke to all the other staff.

Before I knew it I was being asked by everyone to be shown the system. It was fantastic every one without exception was so impressed they wondered why we have to wait till May 8th.

It also helped us absorb the training and we found ourselves trying to look at things we had not yet learnt.

I would say that it is very user friendly and navigation is far clearer than our present system.

Going forward

So our next step is to go through at least 20 records to check ALL the data is the same on the PCS as the WEB version. Following advice from others we are going to get our staff to do this work.

This then gives them hands on experience and allows them to feel part of the changeover.

We have another training session next week!
