The Secret Diary of a Practice Manager Part 4

The secret diary of a practice manager strikes again...

Well here I am back at work after a 2 week holiday. Unlike other years I resisted the urge to access my emails whilst I was away until the very last day when there was a little rain.

Over three hundred emails awaited me. Most got the simple delete and the others got me thinking as to what I was going to return to?

The emails consisted of apologies as to why the end of month payments from the new CCG were going to be late and also that some payments would be missing due to problems with the new organisation. Also the same day LES was stopped without any prior notification.  Wonderful, I thought, how are practices going to manage as not all have extra funds in their accounts to pay the suppliers and staff wages at the end of the month. I know we do so I was not unduly worried.

Other emails consisted of notifying us of changes and then others contradicting what had already been sent. Nothing new there then is there?

I switched off the kindle and continued my holiday.

Returning to work I found my in tray heaving with letters which took some time to sort out. Most of which were shredded as they were sales junk. “How many couch rolls can you buy on special offer?”

Then I caught up with my partner. “How are things?” I asked. He told me to sit down. Then I got to hear about a member of staff that was having an operation and will be off for 4 weeks, another staff member has an operation booked and will also be off for about 4 weeks, another one I knew about before I left had not heard about the date of her operation. One other member of staff’s brother died suddenly, and another member of staff’s partner is very poorly in hospital. I only have 8 members of staff!!! And I have only been away 2 weeks. Welcome back I thought!!!

Anyhow, I asked my partner, how were things a part from that and was told “oh just fine seeing patients is the easy part”.  The best was kept from me till later on when a salaried GP asked me if I had heard about the complaint against him. I knew one was pending but was surprised that the person had put it in writing.

Fortunately I returned on a Friday so I have the weekend to get back into the swing of things before I tackle the backlog of work. Oh and by the way can anyone lend me some staff?
