Occupational Health Update
In a recent response published this month, the government has accepted most of the recommendations made by the Sickness Absence Review (SAR) designed to help those with health conditions both stay in, and return to work. The review was published in November 2011 and the response has therefore taken a considerable time.
A key development is the establishment of a government-funded occupational health service – the Independent Assessment Service (IAS) – which will provide an assessment by occupational health professionals for employees who have been on sick leave for four weeks to 'signpost' appropriate interventions, provide employers and employees with advice on overcoming barriers to a return to work, and provide case management for employees with complex needs who require on-going support to enable their return to work. It is anticipated that this will be in place from 2014.
