How taking inspiration from Euro 2016 can help your practice meet its goals

Many of the home nations’ football teams have taken part in the European Championships in France over the past few weeks - with some performing much better than others. Wales take a bow!

As anticipation rises to fever pitch ahead of the final in Paris next week, here are some lessons that can be taken away from this month’s feast of football…

Engage and encourage your own local superstars

Arrange some posters and leaflets around the practice to motivate patients who have been inspired by the Euros, Wimbledon or the upcoming Olympics.

Why not put together a  Summer of Sport-themed display promoting NHS initiatives such as Live Well and Change4Life – you may have a new superstar in your midst who just needs an extra push to get more active!

Avoid scoring any own goals

In the same way a player wouldn't kick off a match without properly warming up, practices should be as prepared as possible for what’s ahead.

All PMs should at least be thinking about forthcoming changes in clinical coding with SNOMED CT waiting in the wings, while practices in England ought to be well prepared for the full implementation of the Accessible Information Standard next month.

Bring your team together

It’s been proved plenty of times before that management isn’t always the simplest task and can leave you open to criticism, but get things right and you can become an instant hero.

We know that job satisfaction is hugely important - when you’re happy, your team is more likely to be happy too. If haven’t already done so, why not take part in our Job Satisfaction Survey to help us capture the mood of practice managers in 2016?

Hone your technique and aim high

British teams may not have been among the hot favourites to grab glory at this year’s tournament, but they’ve all had their share of memorable moments. Similarly, every practice will have areas where they excel!

Regardless of whether CQC inspections are something you have to contend with in your country, the initiatives they hand out ‘outstanding‘ ratings for are often great ideas regardless. Keep an eye out for a forthcoming article on FPM that features some inspirational ideas from practices that have pulled out all the stops and achieved outstanding results.

Get your tactics right

Footballers wouldn’t be sent onto the field without knowing exactly what’s expected of them, either as a group or an individual, and neither should a practice team.

Regardless of whether you know your 4-4-2 from your Christmas tree formation, FPM members can rest assured that they have access to a wide-ranging selection of policies and procedures that receive regular, timely updates that will help keep them and their team on the front foot.

Are there any more key lessons we can take from this year’s European Championships? Or maybe Wimbledon is inspiring you to make a racket about keeping a hawk-eye on the latest legislation changes? Let us know in the comments section below.
