Grab some last minute QOF Points... some hint & tips

In my previous life as a practice manager, I often found that this time of year almost runs away with you and everyone is worrying about grabbing those last few QOF points.  In the words of Brucie; "points make prizes".

Here are a couple of hints and tips of things I used to do to:

  • Use your clinical system search and reporting tools to check that the correct codes have been used.  You may see a patient on the ‘not included list’ which you know came in for a particular chronic disease review.

  • Check you are using an up-to-date version of a data entry template for the QOF indicators. It can be easy to miss an update from your clinical system provider with a new template version and before you know it there could be valuable points missed.

  • Check that your GPs and nurses are using the correct data entry templates.  Often templates are updated but users continue unknowingly to use an out of date template?

  • If you have created your own templates, check that they do not contain any local codes.

  • Remember that your clinical system is now very sophisticated in terms of reminding your clinicians of tasks that need to be undertaken for a patient.  Encourage them to make the most of these tools (i.e pop up alerts etc)

  • Ask the reception staff to gather information as the patients are checking in e.g. what is their current smoking status?

  • Use your practice website to ask patients to update their details online.  You can include items such as height and weight (to generate a BMI reading), smoking status and other QOF related questions.

  • More often than not it is the patients that tend not to come to the surgery when invited that need the most attention and of course there are some patients that cannot attend; maybe they are housebound.  To ensure they are receiving the care they need, consider home visit chronic disease reviews ensuring excellent patient care as well as the having the opportunity to gather more QOF points.

Have you got any other hints and tips?  We would love you to share in the comments section below.
