A look ahead to FPM’s 2016 Managing People in General Practice Survey

Last year, First Practice Management launched our inaugural ‘Managing People’ survey in order to explore the priorities and pressures involved in managing people in general practice. The survey proved a great success, not only helping us to keep up to date with the needs of practice managers, but also providing an opportunity to shed more light on the realities of managing busy GP practices.

This year we are proud to announce we will be collaborating on the 2016 Managing People survey with the University of Leeds, one of the UK’s leading academic institutions. The partnership will allow us to enhance the survey further and help us give practice managers an even greater voice in primary care.

Watch out for our Managing People in General Practice Survey 2016 – launching on July 27th.

This year we will be placing more of a focus on the impact of regulation on general practice, including the work of the CQC, and asking how those working in practice management feel that it has affected the employment relationship.

The survey, supported by Leeds University Business School, is open to anyone who holds a management role in general practice, and participants will have the opportunity to be entered into a prize draw with the chance of winning high street vouchers.

Here are some of the key findings from last year’s survey:

  • Patients and colleagues are the cause of most grumbles from staff.
  • There is a perception that clinical staff are more satisfied in their work than their non-clinical colleagues.
  • Legal compliance was identified as the main priority in managing people, and keeping up to date with legal changes as the main area that PMs felt they need support in.
  • Staff sickness absence is the most common HR issue for general practice.
