Starting this September, the experts at Thornfields primary care training will be delivering a brand-new and innovative development programme, designed especially for aspiring practice managers.
The workforce challenges currently faced by large organisations in the primary care sector at the moment are acute, so there has never been a better time to invest in leadership training and succession planning. So whether you’re a PCB, an ICB, ICN or other higher level organisation, the time you spend developing the talent of today into the practice managers of tomorrow will pay dividends into the future.
The programme has been built with aspiring general practice managers in mind, as well as managers that would like to refresh or increase their understanding of primary care processes.
Delegates learning in groups of up to 15 can expect a high-quality mix of reflective discussions and theoretical input, all brought together into one powerful package by 1:1 coaching throughout.
Prior to the training programme, a one-hour coaching session will enable delegates to establish their goals, and introduce the key skills of reflection and journaling to record progress. Virtual sessions are also held mid-way and at the end of the training programme. The training manager becomes a coaching friend to help the learners achieve their goals, have greater confidence, improve work performance and build effective leadership and communication skills.
Specialised, bespoke workshops
The programme begins with level 1 essential workshops, (shown in green above) setting up the main pillars of understanding around the issues a practice manager has to deal with. These are full-day workshops, held face-to-face for maximum engagement and efficacy. Whether it’s finances, CQC inspections, employment contracts or health and safety matters, these sessions are interactive and learner-led, encouraging aspiring managers to discuss their individual experiences to draw out learning.
Midway through the session delegates will meet with their expert training coach again. They’ll reflect on progress, identify any challenges and support needed, and agree what will be reviewed in the final coaching session.
They then have the option of a series of level 2 optional workshops (shown in blue in the diagram above). These are half-day workshops, delivered either virtually or in person. They cover a whole range of areas that a practice manager must be competent and knowledgeable in, such as partnership working, leadership, managing talent, appraisal skills, managing change and handling difficult conversation.
At the final coaching session at the end of the course, delegates will discuss how far they’ve come and how much they have learnt on their journey towards becoming a practice manager. They’ll also be presented with a final, detailed feedback report from their coach.
