FPM’s Practice of the Month - Alliance Teaching Practice

At FPM we are always keen to celebrate the amazing work Primary Care teams do for their patients.

This month we are showcasing all the fantastic things Alliance Teaching Practice is doing in their communities and the services they’re particularly proud of.


What is the name of your GP practice?

We operate 4 sites in Coventry under the branding of Alliance Teaching Practice. They are:

  • Alliance Teaching Practices @ Broad Lane
  • Alliance Teaching Practices @ City of Coventry Health Centre
  • Alliance Teaching Practices @ Foleshill
  • Alliance Teaching Practices @ Stoke Aldermoor

What is your patient list size?

17000 combined

What is the main demographic of your practice?

Our practice is spread across 4 sites that cover most areas of Coventry. Our patient demographic is wide ranging from are inner city to suburban with ages spreading from newborn children, young families, working professionals and our older population.

We pride ourselves on our welcoming approach to patients from all backgrounds for example, we have a strong Romanian patient population in our Foleshill site who we are working hard to support.

We’d love to hear about how you engage with your local community?

We have taken on the management of the practices from previous providers in July 2020. We are currently working on rebranding these surgeries in order to change the perception to services provided as not reactive but proactive

We are working really hard to understand our patient population and the things that are important to them. We have now issued our first patient newsletter where we are approaching our patients to communicate with and introduce who we are. This is available on our website and we are translating this into popular community languages to ensure it is accessible to our patients.

We are in the process of re-establishing our link with Patient Participation group. We are looking at different ways to establish this, not just the traditional meet and greet. For example listening to feedback from our patients through our links with Healthwatch and other community groups.

Our Foleshill site is moving to new, purpose built premises in July 2021. We are planning an open event for our patients to visit us on our new premises. (subject to covid guidance available at the time). We believe this is a good opportunity to get to know the people and the communities we serve. We are planning to invite community groups and other services to promote well being. For example the Carers Trust, stop smoking services, NHS Health Checks etc.

We are promoting carers trust and support to our registered carers actively seeking patients that are not registered as carers and would benefit from services offered.

Our staff are also part of our local community. We have worked really well with them through the transition to us as the provider. We are holding staff roadshows during June to hear from the heart of our practices.

Which services that you offer patients are you particularly proud of?

We are really proud of our staff engaging with our patients and the way our patients are responding in such positive and supportive manner. Our feedback from patients are really growing in positivity, showing improved patient experience, and it is very rewarding for all our staff who worked extremely hard in this difficult time. They have risen to all the challenges that Covid has presented, they have also worked alongside one of the Covid Hot Hub clinics, which our practice was proud to host. Staff have also undergone full organisational restructure, change of management and relocation of the practice. They are amazing!

Overall we have been proud to provide good general practice services to an increasingly high standard. Not just maintained, but improved through Covid and the other significant changes mentioned above.

What is the best thing about working at your practice?

The team spirit and positivity of the staff working together and caring for our patients is simply astonishing. The resistance of our staff and the smiles that keep giving is just wonderful to see and this reflects on the care and service the individual sites are providing.

How is your Practice coping with Covid-19?

It has been undoubtedly difficult times. Not just changing from predominantly face to face consultations to telephone consultations first but also two of our sites becoming Hot Hub clinics with one site still remaining and trying to provide all the NHS contract services with a smile while being restricted to times and premises due to shared access. The patients and also staff has been absolutely amazing.

What roles within the practice are working from home?

We do not have any staff that would work remotely from home and we are all practice based. We have kept our staff working together with social distancing and other health & safety precautions put in place but we have kept being there in person for our patients.

How is the practice managing the workload?

We have done really well. Firstly the patients feedback is really positive but also our access have significantly improved in last few month to from the management change in July 2020.

How are you and the team feeling?

Our team in in really positive spirit. We are starting the new year aiming to o achieve 100% in achievements for QOF targets but also to increase in NHS health checks uptakes and other additional services that we can offer.  Mostly we are aiming to continue to offer a great patient experience for our patients, carers and service users.
