The NHS App: New advice issued for Practice Managers

The NHS App has been designed to provide a simple, secure way for patients to access NHS services using their smartphone or tablet. What do practices need to do to prepare for the new service?


NHS Digital has provided new information for GP practice managers about what they need to do to prepare for the rollout. The NHS App is already available for patients to download on Android and iOS devices, with GP practices now gradually being connected to the app.

What's the deadline for connecting your practice to the app?

Patients will have to wait until their practice is connected to the app before they can take advantage of all of its features. The aim is for all practices to be connected by 1 July 2019.

NHS England and NHS Digital are working closely with CCGs to schedule connection dates for GP practices. To help ensure patients have a smooth experience of the app, NHS Digital is asking practices to put clear plans in place before they promote the app to patients.

This means preparing systems so that appointments are available to book and it is clear. Staff should also be briefed on how the app works so that they are able to support patients. Further information is available in NHS Digital’s guidance for GP practices, which you can find by clicking here.

What were the findings of the NHS app pilot?

The NHS App was successfully tested by more than 3,000 patients from 34 GP practices between September and December 2018. During the pilot, NHS Digital collected feedback from GP practice staff and patients, using the information to improve the app and the support process for practices.
