One bad day at the practice: PMs share their horror stories

Everyone has bad days at work, but for a Practice Manager they can feel like a week's worth rolled into one.

The life of a PM can feel isolated, but don’t worry because you really are never alone, as some of these tales will assure you…

“One of my biggest nightmares was when a senior partner thought we needed to save some pennies and suggested that for the staff beverages we substitute supermarket own-brand tea bags for our trusty and much-loved Typhoo.

This would save us some much-needed dosh over the course of the year and every year thereafter and no one will know any different as they are all the same - aren't they?

Unfortunately, we hadn't accounted for how particular people are about their choice of teabags.

Our substitutions were spotted immediately and met by open hostility and comments like: "so now we are not even worth the price of Typhoo any more..." alongside other emotion-laden remarks. Things got fairly tense for a few days as essentially we had a 'Mexican stand-off' over tea bags.”

There’s a very important management lesson here - don't mess with your staff’s teabags! Some may say a storm in a tea cup - but I just couldn't comment!

Here are a few more nightmarish tales that Practice Managers have shared with us:

"My worst nightmare happens at least once a month... I enter the practice to find either not a drop of milk left and no-one is willing to nip out and get some or - worst of all - gone-off milk has been left festering all weekend.

I have the lovely job of first thing Monday morning emptying it out and then still needing to go and get more..."

Ultimately, the role of a Practice Manager will always mean the odd bad day - it just comes with the turf. FPM will always be here as your helpful right-hand in the days to come, good and bad!

FPM members can rely on us during those bad days, with access to a wide range of

Being the sponge and feeling so saturated that one more drop will drown you! Unfortunately most days are like that and our supportive staff and Drs do not always know how much we are going through!

One of the first things I learnt on becoming a PM in this country was don't mess with the tea.
