Revalidation for nurses - Does the prep start now? We say yes.

The publication of finalised revalidation guidance for nurses and midwives is expected in October with the process taking place in spring 2016.

This procedure is to demonstrate that practise is being completed safely and it will strengthen the renewal process which currently takes place every three years.

What is the new code?

This revised code became effective on 31 March 2015.  All nurses and midwives are required to uphold its standards of practice and behaviours.

It centres around four themes:

  1. Prioritise people
  2. Practise effectively
  3. Preserve safely
  4. Promote professionalism and trust

What are the employer’s responsibilities?

As employers practices need to ensure that systems and processes are in place to check that their nursing staff are registered with the relevant professional body. They must only use a protected professional title where their qualifications and registration allows them to do so.

Practices must also ensure that staff are aware of and adhere to any codes of professional conduct that apply to them.

Checklist for General Practice

  • Do you have documentation on file that records the NMC renewal dates for your practice nurses? The first nurses to go through the revalidation process are expected to be those with an NMC renewal date in April 2016.
  •  Are all your nurses registered for NMC Online?
  • Are there any gaps in your nurses’ CPD if their revalidation is imminent? Practices should understand their responsibilities as employers with regards to revalidation and nurses should be starting to develop their portfolio.
  • Check to see that your nurses have collated their evidence or feedback? Do you need to assist in anyway with SEA's, FFT's, Compliments and complaints?
  • Do they need their annual appraisal earlier to ensure they are ready for revalidation? If so plan for this and make sure sufficient time has been allocated.
  • Are your nurses confident at undertaking reflective practice?
  • Do you need to access another NMC registrant perhaps from a different practice? This will be the case if you only have one practice nurse, is there a local practice you could buddy with?
  • Put in place plans for all of your nurses to receive their third party confirmation as part of their annual appraisal, or establish some other system for confirmation to take place.

Revalidation is a continuous process that nurses and midwives will engage with throughout their career. It is not a point in time activity or assessment, so it is important to be prepared and make sure your nurses know about this new procedure.
