Patricia Gray

Patricia is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (FCIPD). Since April 2005, she has run her own management and HR consultancy in General Practice. For eleven years prior to that, she was the Business Manager/Partner of a large two-site GP surgery in Hertfordshire. Over the past decade, Patricia has worked with many practices all over the UK and really understands the issues and the environment. She provides the following services:

Training: Workshops in a range of subjects including:

Employment Law Updates, Handling Grievances and Discipline, Avoiding Discrimination, Contracts of Employment, Managing Sickness Absence, Managing Performance, Staff Appraisals, Recruitment and Selection, Pay and other Rewards, Facilitation Skills, Time Management, Managing Stress, Personal Development, Assertiveness Skills, Developing Excellent Communications, Running Effective Meetings, Handling Difficult People, Training and Developing Staff, Partnership Team-Working.

Practice Consultancy: Patricia is a practice consultant, trained by a programme run by the RCGP. A practice consultancy helps the practice identify key issues and provides advice and options to help the practice develop or make necessary changes. The consultancy involves visiting the practice, meeting the manager, partners and other members of the practice team, reviewing systems and the environment, and making recommendations to the partners. The visit is backed up with a detailed written report.

HR Advice: Ad hoc or on-going HR advice, such as contractual issues, handling grievances, discipline and dismissals, allegations of bullying and harassment, discrimination claims, managing performance, absenteeism and sickness management, inter-personal conflicts.

HR Reviews: Reviews of the use of personnel resources including management, administration, and nursing, including reviewing the organisational structure, individual roles, lines of accountability, workload management, development of roles, team working, rates of pay and other conditions.

Partnership Development: Patricia is a facilitator trained through a programme run by the NHS Exec. She plans and runs partnership away days to help partners develop effective team-working, focusing on issues such as leadership, communications, meetings, decision-making, sharing the workload, accommodating outside interests, practice finances, individual behaviours, conflict, a practice vision, and the interaction of the partnership with the manager, salaried doctors, nurses and other non-clinical staff.

All Practice Team-Building Events: Half day, whole day and two-day team-building events for the practice team to identify the threats and opportunities, the key areas for development, and a plan to develop the practice. These events are fun, motivating and productive, but importantly ensure that every member of the team contributes ideas, feels involved and ultimately is on-board with changes.

Practice and Business Manager Recruitment
: Working with FPM, Patricia recruits practice and business managers. This involves designing a practice profile, job description and person specification, advising on advertising, short-listing applicants for interview, organising and running two-day interviews, providing HR and employment advice, and facilitating the final decision.

Coaching: Patricia has a particular interest in personal development and she is an accredited performance coach. She provides coaching to GPs and practice managers so that they can identify areas of their life where they need to make changes and decide on some inspiring and motivating goals.

Coaching is invaluable to support individuals through the process, keeping them on track and ensuring that they achieve their goals. GPs and practice managers are busy with the needs of others and can easily ignore their own development. Coaching is an ideal and convenient way of achieving real changes at work and with life in general. It is enjoyable, fascinating and challenging, and it is also highly effective.
